Removals to France - how to ensure your move to Europe is as smooth and stress free as possible

It is now extremely easy for European citizens to move between countries, and many people move to France each year to realise their dream of living a quieter, calmer lifestyle. Although French properties have increased significantly in price in the last decade, there are still bargains to be had in rural areas, particularly if you are prepared to carry out work on the property.

Moving to any European country is a big life change, and a huge amount of organisation is involved. We have put together a guide to moving to France here, which covers the basics on starting a business in France, visas and work permits, choosing school and health care.

This article discusses how you can make the move day itself as stress free as possible through choosing a reliable removals company, and preparing yourself for the move.

Choosing a good removals company

Choosing a good Removals Company will help to relieve any additional stress on the day of your move. You will already have a lot to think about, and most likely be tired from all of the packing, cleaning and finishing off at your old property.

Whether you travel to your new home by air, road or car train, moving to France involves many hours of travelling which all takes its toll. So hiring a friendly, professional removal company that delivers all of your belongings safely is a must.

Take the time to research removal companies well in advance of your move. Look for firms who have been trading for a solid period of time, and who are members of professional organisations such as the British Association of Removers. Choose a company that has plenty of experience in moving people overseas, as there is more involved in an overseas move, than moving within the UK. Also remember to shop around for quotes, and compare these to the service offered.

Preparing yourself for the move

Moving to another country can take a bit of getting used to. There will be differences in language, customs, climate, food, and lifestyle amongst other things. The more you can find out about the area you are moving to prior to the moving day, the easier it will be to settle in. This will also ensure that when you arrive, everything runs as smoothly as possible.

Learning French is a good idea for all of the family and can be a good way to help prepare children for the move. There are lots of good programmes on the market that can be used at home in the months before you depart. Other methods of learning the language include finding a private tutor or attending classes at a local college.

Entertaining your children on the day of the move

With long travel times it is essential to keep children occupied to help them through the journey. Plan in advance what books and toys they will want to have with them to ensure these don’t get packed away. Buying them a new book or game that they are excited about will help to pass the time, and relieve boredom. Try involving them prior to the move and ask them what they would like.

It is good to break the journey up, and if you are driving to France it is advised that you take a break every two hours or so. Planning interesting stops to tourist sites can help to make the journey more enjoyable and gives children things to look forward to. On French motorways there are a good selection of picnic sites, particularly on the toll roads (péages).
